How to Support Us

You may have heard of us. You may have seen our work or been a participant recently or when you were growing up - we’ve been around for a while working here in the community of Barrow-in-Furness. In fact, we’ve been here for 27 years!

Why Support Theatre Factory?

Many of our beneficiaries come from Barrow’s poorest wards and most excluded sectors and our activities are FREE at the point of delivery.

Here's an example our work in the community - Furness Carers Young Carers Animation

As a Charity, we have no income other than from grants - which we have to apply for - from The Arts Council, grant giving Charities and Foundations, Local Authorities and donations from supporters.

Anything you can donate will help us make a difference to young people, helping our community to thrive, build resilience and create happiness.

'Youth Theatre means a lot to me because I can be myself without being judged and I don’t feel like I have to be someone I’m not.'

And here's a thing . . .

  • Ability: 50% of our participants in our Youth Theatre activities identify as neurodiverse. All our work aims to support people’s mental health and well-being.
  • Culture: we work in partnership, offering support and creative activity to the refugee, asylum seeking and migrant community.
  • Gender and Sexuality: we work in partnership supporting the LGBTQI+ community with creative projects.
  • Economic Challenge: we partner with organisations working with young people who are facing economic disadvantage and with key Primary Schools in the most economically challenged Wards.
‘To be honest my day was going crap, then you turned up and now it’s fantastic.’

'Barrow Youth Theatre was the first place I
came to when I moved here, and it immediately allowed me to make friends and exposed me to the community and their culture in a non-judgemental and friendly environment.'

‘My grandson is Autistic, he never talks to anyone. Just look at him with your people and that dog! I can’t believe it!’

We make stories in many forms: theatre (indoors & out), animation, digital & sound, with our participants’ ideas at the heart of everything we do. Our story-based activities help build resilience, hope, happiness and a pathway to self-development, good mental health, & well-being.

We have developed a way of working which is led by children and young people, by using an improvisation process which develops creative thinking, responsiveness, cooperation and collaboration skills. Our work is informed by working class lived experience and is designed to make changes which are embedded and lasting.

MAKING STORIES, DEVELOPING TALENT, BUILDING CHANGE is our vision, and inclusion is at the core of all our activities.

'

. . . a sort of Narnia back of the wardrobe moment, suddenly finding a little pocket of energy and kindness and hope.'

'The role that Theatre Factory plays within the community is vital in providing a safe space for all people to express and experiment through creativity.'

'Barrow Youth Theatre is like a second family. It brings together different personalities and joins them through their love of drama. When I come here every week, I can’t wait to see everyone. BYT is the only place I can truly express myself and be the real me.
